CranioSacral Therapy Benefits For Canines
Shadow
I remember one day when we were packing to move to Michigan, something started happening to Shadow. I was not aware of epilepsy, but this I found out later that she has epilepsy when her seizures lasted longer. When she had her seizures, all my family can do was to comfort her. When seizures stopped, she was still weak. This continued to happen and increased to 17 minutes.
I had studied CranioSacral Therapy for some time, and I never thought of doing a CranioSacral hold on Shadow. One day when she was having her seizure I did a CranioSacral hold called “Rock and Glide.” I’m not sure what prompted me to do that, but that day in May 2008 I did, and her seizure lasted for about 7 minutes. I didn’t do that hold when her seizure started, but I always timed how long it lasted in the past. I knew that 7 minutes was short compared to her other recent seizures that lasted sometimes up to 17 minutes. I was so happy, thrilled, and touched that the CranioSacral Therapy assisted her. We never like the thought of giving her pills, and she never received them, but we made sure we were there to hold her, comfort her, and nurture her when it happened. When she has her seizure, she receives just this hold and her seizure will only last for close to 5 minutes.

Zeus
On October 4, 2008, I was packing my vehicle early in the morning at 6:00 a.m. for Kalamazoo Farmer’s Market. My dog sleeps with us in our room, and straight from our room he was with me while I was packing. My purpose to be a vendor at the Kalamazoo Farmer’s Market was to sell my 200 lbs. Concord grapes. I had many boxes filled with Concord grapes all over the kitchen counter and on family table by the door leading out to the garage. My dog decided to jump up on the table and grabbed a bunch full of Concord grapes and started eating them. My husband did warn me back in 2005 that grapes aren’t good for dogs, but my husband says that dogs have to eat so much of it. I’m not sure of how much that would be for them to get sick. I was in a hurry to load my vehicle that I didn’t think it was going to affect him negatively by eating those Concord grapes; so I didn’t bother to take it away from him.
That afternoon at about 2:45 p.m. when I arrived home, I noticed Zeus was weak, could hardly walk, and uncoordinated. He’s normally very energetic when I come home, but he was not wagging his tail nor was he very cheerful and happy. He walked sooo slowly with his tail down. The rest of my family even noticed this about him.
I continued to unload everything out of my car and I didn’t paid much attention to what was going on with him. It did cross my mind that due to my husband being sick that day I thought Zeus was sick , too. I knew that dogs don’t catch cold or get the flu, but then it struck me that the only thing that would have made him sick was the Concord grapes he ate that morning. I continued to observe him and realized I’ve never seen him in that position before. I began to worry on what would happen to him. I decided to do the same hold as I did on Shadow. I stayed with this hold for about 4 minutes. When I stopped, I gave him a command to stand up. Then amazingly he was wagging his tail, he was energetic and very happy to see me.
I am so grateful Dr. Upledger had created this therapy. It is so gentle, but yet so powerful. I’m glad that I may assist my dogs when they are in need, because they are part of my family. I believe they know and understand what’s going on with them when they receive CranioSacral Therapy.
